A Castle Christmas

Dunster Castle was a happy detour on the way back to town on Sunday. Once a castle, previously a home and now is open to visitors.  As castles go It is a pretty good one, complete with dungeons and gun powder damage from the civil war.

Rather touching was that the antlers of a stag that had been found drowned in a local river were displayed.

More wonderful painted bird wall papers are to be found in the blue drawing room.

During several restorations in from the C18th through to the early C20th, the castle was made to serve as a more romantic country house. The outcome of which is wonderfully detailed wood and plaster carvings and a beautiful light filled 1920’s pale green morning room.

Outside, there are glorious views to the East of the unfolding Somerset countryside and to the West of an expansive coastline along the Bristol Channel towards Wales.
